Sales Rep 101 – Chapter 34

Know Your Skillset

This is probably the most important thing you need to understand about sales. There are a lot of different types of sales jobs and each one requires a different skillset. In order for you to maximize your ability and to make the most money for yourself, you need to be find the right kind of sales that fits with your best skillsets. For example, let’s say that you are very good with people and you can make most people feel comfortable with you when they are around you. This type of skill works really well with In-Home sales because you are basically a stranger in their house. And in order for them to buy what you are selling they will need to feel comfortable with you and trust you.

On the other hand let’s say that your best strength is that you are a go-getter. You may not have the best people skills but you work very hard and do whatever it takes to make sales. In this case I would say that Outside Sales would be a great fit for that person. In Outside Sales you need to be willing to work hard prospecting for new customers. You can make a great income in Outside Sales if you are willing to work hard.

If you are new to sales you may not realize what your best skillset is just yet. And that is okay. But as you are starting out in your first job make sure to make this a priority. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. You should always be willing to work on your weaknesses, but it is more important to understand what you are good at. As your career goes on you will start to look for jobs that you will be able to take advantage of your strengths.
